PRESENTATION DETAILS:

Commissioned by NADCA, this work seeks to better understand the performance and possibilities of applying metal additive manufacturing to die cast tooling through the examination of in-service damage sustained by actual die component inserts. Employing various nondestructive and destructive characterization, failure analysis, modeling and simulation techniques, the authors have revealed a variety of current strengths, weaknesses, and uncertainties to help interested users better focus additive process development, and leverage the exciting potential of Laser Powder Bed Fusion, (LPBF) in particular.
Often limited by the availability of specific tooling and die casting process information, the scope of work evolved over the course of the project. Spanning the macro, meso, and micro scales, this work comprehends the metal powder and a series of 6 (six) components including a virgin exemplar along with examinations of material composition, structure, and properties. Limited stress analyses were performed on 2 of the 6 candidate components to compare predictions with actual observations.
