Thermal runaway propagation (TRP) occurs in a battery electric vehicle (BEV) when a single Li‑ion cell becomes unstable by transferring enough thermal energy to its neighbors that they too are triggered to instability.

Understanding and mitigating against thermal propagation is one of the most difficult challenges currently facing BEV designers, as well as being a tightly coupled, stochastic problem that often defies Multiphysics simulation. Within automotive OEMs, TRP cuts across multiple engineering domains and organizational boundaries, touching on cell chemistry and lifecycle, thermal management, electrical bus layout, structural design, pack sealing, material selection, instrumentation, and software.

The following will be discussed:

  • Estimating heat release from a Li-ion cell in thermal runaway
  • The various pathways thermal energy can take
  • The relative importance of thermal barriers, active cooling, and gas management
  • The quantities and qualities of solid-, liquid-, and gas-phase ejecta
  • Data from mini-module thermal propagation testing
  • System engineering and prioritization when designing a TRP solution
