Overview: Portable electronic devices such as smart phones and tablets are indispensable for many people. These devices integrate high speed computer processors, electronic cameras, satellite-based position services, and radios to support voice and data communications. In late 2013, US airlines allowed passengers to use their tablets, laptops, e-readers and video players during all phases of flight, but require that passengers turn their phones to "airplane mode" during flight. This change seems inconsistent with the earlier restrictions where passengers had to turn off all portable electronic devices during takeoff and landing.
